Internship in Community-Based Lactation Consultation

Do you seek experience in lactation consultation?

We know that it can be difficult to obtain lactation consulting experience. To meet this need within our community and provide valuable community-based lactation consultation experience, we have created the Happy Bambino Internship in Lactation Consultation.

Happy Bambino's Nursing Mamas' Resource Station community-based breastfeeding clinic where the Intern can expect to observe infants of various ages (from days to months old) who come with a range of challenges related to lactation. In addition, Happy Bambino's Lactation Internship can connect its interns with local professionals for breastfeeding experience in a variety of contexts.

Happy Bambino's Internship in Lactation Work provides:

Hours shadowing and working at Happy Bambino's Nursing Mamas' Resource Station with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) - assisting with breastfeeding issues specific to newborns, multiples, and children of various ages..
Enrollment in Happy Bambino's breastfeeding classes and an opportunity to participate in lactation education by co-teaching a Happy Bambino breastfeeding class.

In addition to working in Happy Bambino's breastfeeding clinic, Happy Bambino will assist the Lactation Intern to connect with local professionals and resources in an effort to experience::

Home visit(s) for personalized lactation consultation with an IBCLC
Networking with nurses, La Leche League leaders, midwives, doulas, and other lactation professionals
Observation of postpartum lactation help following a home or birth center birth
A tour of Wisconsin's milk depot
A variety of local breastfeeding classes facilitated by different instructors
Lactation consultation within a formal hospital setting
Relevant lactation conferences and educational experiences

Responsibilities of the Intern:
The Happy Bambino Lactation Intern will sign a contract with Happy Bambino and adhere to Happy Bambino's HIPPA policy. The intern will be expected to fulfill their hours and maintain a journal/log of their experiences, a copy of which will be reviewed by a Happy Bambino lactation consultant.

Internship Cost:
Internship A: 50 hours, $250
Internship B: 100 hours, $375

Application Process:
This internship is appropriate for Certified Lactation Counselors, Birth educators, Birth & Postpartum Doulas, and other professionals wishing to gain experience with lactation counseling in a community-based setting and working with moms and babies in the critical period of lactation initiatation (2 days to 10 days post birth).

To apply, please complete the Happy Bambino Lactation Internship application and return it to us. We will then contact you to set up an interview. If you are accepted to the Internship, you will meet with the IBCLC on staff to discuss your schedule and experience with lactation. The Internship will begin with observation of the IBCLC and progress to completing intakes for nursing mothers. The Intern will work with the IBCLC on staff to determine his/her ability to provide counseling under the supervision of the IBCLC.

Happy Bambino will accept a maximum of two interns simultaneously on a rolling application basis. Please contact us to inquire as to if we have a current opening.
